Motor Trend Takes a Porsche 911 GT3 RS to Laguna Seca

Each year the guys at Motor Trend make a selection of some of the finest sports cars on sale and take them through several tests in order to determine a winner as the Best Driver’s Car for the year.

In the video that follows, the track-oriented Porsche 911 GT3 RS (Type 997 MK2) is being driven hard by Randy Pobst (aka “The Rocket”) on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca . The lap time achieved is 1:36.77 which is less than half a second slower than that posted by Lexus LFA, the fastest car tested by Motor Trend for 2011′s Best Driver’s Car. But let’s not forget that the Lexus is almost three times as expensive and the GT3 RS has no paddle shift gadgetry, but a good old-fashioned manual gearbox… which may add some time depending on the skills of the driver.

The All New Porsche 911 Carrera S (Type 991)

The same old unmistakable 911 shape but with completely reworked design elements and body. As Porsche, themselves, say in their latest press release: “At 48 the Porsche 911 Carrera is younger than ever”. I tend to agree 100% with that statement. The 911 Carrera has never looked so beautiful and elegant until the first photos of the type 991 appeared online. It will make its official debut at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.

This new 911 Carrera S is equipped with a 3.8-litre boxer engine found in the regular place (at the back) and delivers 400 hp (294 kW). Compared to its predecessor the power has been increased by 15 hp, but fuel consumption went down by 14% based on the New European Driving Cycle to achieve a mere 8.7 l/100 km (or 32 mpg).

Ahhhh! Feels like going back in time when watching old episodes of Top Gear – a show that will forever stay in the hearts of many car fans. And guess what… Jeremy had lots of hair back then and there was the Black Stig. Too bad that when the Stig was setting the lap time at the Top Gear’s airport track it was raining and he couldn’t achieve a better time for the 911 Turbo.

Absolute madness: Cayenne Turbo vs 911 Carrera 4S

At first it might seem to most of you that a big SUV doesn’t stand a chance against such an iconic sports car as the 911, but the Cayenne Turbo might prove you wrong. Really wrong!
In fact, the guys behind the UK car magazine Autocar went to a handling circuit to pit the two Porsches against each other. Watch the video comparison for yourself after the jump.

New 911 GT3 video released by Porsche

Porsche released information and a video of the new GT3 in action. Rally legend, Walter Rohrl is behind the wheel. This is the most powerful GT3 ever. Engine size has been increased to 3.8 liters, producing 435 bhp, 20 more than its predecessor.

The track warrior accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 312 km/h. Watch the video after the jump.

“If you love cars, you’re gonna love this!” – Jason Plato. Enough said? Anyway, some mind blowing figures and facts about the 997 Turbo:

0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds (3.4 with the optional Tiptronic transmission)
Top speed of 193 mph (310 km/h)
3.6 L flat-six turbocharged engine developing 480 PS (353 kW/473bhp) and 620 Nm (460 ft·lbf_f) of torque (equipped with the optional Sports Chrono package – 680 Nm)
AWD with PTM (Porsche Traction Management), which means greater stability and better traction on all kind of surfaces, compared to older AWD Porsche cars
Time of 7:38 at the famous Nordschleife track
